Stem Cell Research and Cloning

Goals: Develop responsible scientific guidelines, but encourage research and knowledge

Reasons: Knowledge and research are generally good, but it must be controlled. We must maintain the integrity of human life. We must address "harvesting" (i.e., specific production of embryos for destruction) issue. However, if quality of life for many can be meaningfully improved, we must not simply close the stem cell door. It seems the door was opened years ago when we allowed fertilized eggs to be frozen. How many of those embryos go to waste? We need to confirm that research is meaningful. We need to confirm that existing guidelines for private research/medical use are working. However, the bio-ethical issues aside, the federal government should not be conducting such research from a financial standpoint. It is outside the role of the federal government. If private industry, charity or state government (although that is a stretch outside the academic context) wants to pursue such research, it should do so (under controlled circumstances). We must not blur moral/ethical and safety issues with financial issues.
