Racism, Sexism and Other Discrimination
- Promote equal opportunity for all; demand equal rights; encourage equal results.
- Provide opportunities for interaction of diverse groups at a young age in various contexts - school, sports, arts - bring various segments of society together in non-threatening circumstances. Develop joint programs between inner city and suburban schools
- No affirmative action - (Affirmative action promotes racism and demeans) Instead of affirmative action, develop programs to assist those who do not meet qualification standards in meeting the stated criteria; use of community colleges to help - help promote students coming out of those programs. This places some responsibility on those seeking advancement, rather than merely "entitling" a class of people to the detriment of other classes
- Develop cultural leaders who will take active, responsible roles
- Leadership training
- Encourage a stronger group of minority leaders who seek to raise up a minority rather than bring down or blame others.
- Eliminate "boy only" and "girl only" awards and scholarships at public institutions
Goals: Eliminate improper discrimination (some discrimination is good)
Reasons: We must provide opportunities to all. We must eliminate hatred. We must learn to know each other. If we bring people together in sports and other leisure settings, the walls will be broken down. Affirmative action opens the door to keep racism alive; where do you draw the lines for merit verses ratios (NBA, entertainment, other)?
"...That my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." -Martin Luther King
"If you judge people, you have no time to love them." -Mother Teresa
"Where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is organized conspiracy to oppress, rob, and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe." -Frederick Douglass
