Goals: Revive the American spirit
Reasons: Like in so many other areas of our society, we have become complacent in our view of the United States of America and the freedoms and opportunities it offers. We need to review our history in the context of the world. We are the most advanced, most free country in history. Is there still work to be done? Absolutely! The spirit of America can lead the world to freedom and prosperity - not by force but by example and charity. We have something very special in America - freedom. We must treasure it. We must thank our ancestors. We must teach our descendants. We must offer it to others around the world, remembering that we cannot force freedom upon another nation, for forced freedom is not freedom.
"Four freedoms: The first is freedom of speech and expression - everywhere in the world. The second is freedom of everyone to worship God in his own way, everywhere in the world. The third is freedom from want . . . everywhere in the world. The fourth is freedom from fear . . . anywhere in the world." -Franklin Delano Roosevelt
"The whole history of the progress of human liberty shows that all concessions yet made to her august claims have been born of earnest struggle. If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet deprecate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters." -Frederick Douglass
"Freedom is not worth having if it does not connote freedom to err. It passes my comprehension how human beings, be they ever so experienced and able, can delight in depriving other human beings of that precious right." -Mahatma Gandhi
"I anticipate the day when to command respect in the remotest regions, it will be sufficient to say, "I am American." -Gouverneur Morris
"Men who have offered their lives for their country know patriotism is not the fear of something but the love of something." -Adlai Stevenson
