Morality
- In order to have a free society, we must have an underlying moral code to which most members of society agree. In recent years, moral issues have been blurred and avoided here and around the world. The idea is not to have a code that manipulates. However, killing, mutilation, child abuse, slavery, lying, stealing, etc. are wrong. There are practical reasons for such a code -- order in society for example. There are also reasons of humanity. Our society and the world society has accepted a weakened moral code in so many "lesser" actions, that there is confusion about right and wrong. As a result, we have more people pushing the limits in other areas.
- Preserve basic humanity in our society
- This is not a matter of legislating; rather it is accepting that as human beings we are called to a higher standard. Teach those standards.
Goal: Balance orderly society and freedom
Reasons: We need to teach our children and model for our children basic human/moral conduct - respect for one another's rights, property and personhood.
"A government for the people must depend for its success on the intelligence, morality, the justice and the interest of the people themselves." -Grover Cleveland
"Without civic morality communities perish; without personal morality their survival has no value." -Bertrand Russell
