Drug Use
We draw an arbitrary line when we allow alcohol and tobacco use; however, that is where society has chosen to draw it, and we do not need more people's minds impaired; we do not know full risks of other drugs.
- Upgrade law enforcement and penalty systems. With that said I am somewhat uncomfortable with the drinking age. I find it ironic that we give young people the responsibility to vote and serve to defend our country, but do not trust them to drink alcohol responsibly. It may be time to review the arbitrary line and teach/enforce responsibility. It would free up enforcement resources for younger teens. However, responsible use should be taught more effectively. The fear of reprisal leads to some difficulty in monitoring and teaching responsibility.
- Develop a strong community service penalty system for drug offenses to reduce strain on prison system. We need consistency in enforcement and moving to community service can lead to that.
- Enforce under-age drinking and tobacco laws; regardless of where the line is, the laws must be enforced.
- Review prescription drug use and abuse (especially children).
- Medical committee to review FDA's decisions to withdraw certain medications (e.g., certain cough suppressants) and issues regarding drug resistant bacteria.
- Primarily a state law matter, except in assisting enforcement.
- Review segments of society where drug use is accepted and seek leaders within those communities to combat drug use.
- Implement drug-testing to insure that those who are receiving welfare are not using drugs.
- Why should the government be supporting illicit drug use and related health issues?
Goal: Protect our citizens
Reasons: We are not doing a good job of enforcing our laws. We must review the laws and state our reasons for drawing the line where it is. Just as 65 MPH is an arbitrary line for which there is punishment when crossed, so is drug abuse. Safety, health, and protection of our young people are the reasons for these laws. Our youth have access to whatever is legal (and often to what is illegal); therefore, we must limit access to mind- altering substances. Impaired minds lead to medical issues, social issues and a lack of positive contributions to society.
