The overall philosophy is reasonable measures with scientifically verified results.
- Legal unions recognized if recognized by state (state law issue by vote of the people)
- "Marriage" = as defined by religion 1 man and 1 woman (must draw line somewhere; otherwise issues will arise as to children, multiple spouse, family members, etc.)
- Churches and individuals retain the right to say homosexuality is "sinful" (just as adultery is) or "wrong" - Free speech and free religion are essential. Legal rights and morality do not always coincide.
- Consider eliminating legal definition and ramifications of marriage. Consider removing all legal aspects of marriage - convert marriage to a solely religious union (choice of religion) and all other or legal aspects are established by contract.
Goal: Settle the issue
Reasons: The traditional family needs to be encouraged and supported, but no person or group should be de-humanized. Legality and morality differ. There are good reasons to encourage family of husband/wife, but government can only legislate so much (especially when it gave up the adultery issue, accepted cohabitation and accepted divorce as commonplace). Let the religions handle these issues; marriage is a religious concept. Eliminate the legal aspects of marriage and allow non-religious issues to be regulated by contract (on a going forward basis). Thus, we should consider abolishing the legal aspects of marriage. If marriage is viewed as a religious commitment, rather than legal, maybe the commitment will be considered as stronger.
